Culottes have long been one of my favourite pieces of clothing. They’re super chic, a nice alternative to a skirt and because I struggle to wear shorts in the summer (thigh chafe etc!) culottes are a great compromise. I also find them great for Spring and early Summer when it’s a bit too cool to fully bare my legs, culottes allow for a little skin to be aired!
As you can see, I’m a fan! I have 4 pairs that I love and wear all year round. In the warmer weather with sandals and in the cooler months with tights and trainers or boots.
As you can see from the photos, there are lots of different ways of how to style culottes. Don’t be afraid of colour and adventuring with proportions.
Below is my favourite look as it’s the style that’s mostly true to my personal style. I like keeping the colour palette simple and classic, navy is one of my favourite colours to wear, and I think paired with a fine knit wool sweater in grey, with white trainers is a super comfortable, chic way to style these culottes from Zara. Of course the trainers can easily be replaced by heels, but for me it’s all about the trainer!
Oxblood is another one of my go to Autumn colours, so its surprising to see how well it can work in the warmer months when styled correctly. I’ve paired these Topshop culottes with this gorgeous Zara devore velvet longline kimono, which ties back nicely with the lighter flatforms also from Zara. Layered underneath the kimono is a sleeveless ASOS vest, so the look can easily work if the kimono is removed. I particularly like the hi-lo proportions of this outfit, it draws the eye nicely.
Now I’m not usually one that wears THAT much colour! The way I usually wear these the rust culottes is with a navy or black sweater, and the yellow neoprene crop tee with black bottoms or dark indigo jeans. However, I think for the Summer, these colours go together so nicely. The outfit is bright and fun, and the gold from my Russell and Bromley loafers complement the colours well. A tan bag would finish off this look nicely. These culottes are from Zara, and are the same as the same style as navy ones featured above. I loved the style so much I bought both!
Culottes can also been worn in a more formal way, either for dinner, the office or a night out. Just paired with heels and a simple cami tucked in, you’ve got yourself a simple evening outfit. This look can easily be taken back into daytime with sandals or trainers and the culottes make a nice alternative to a skirt.
